'Merle of Malham' has a place in post war yacht racing history being one of the 'of Malhams' designed and owned by Captain John Illingworth. Merle was built to compete in the Junior Offshore Group that John Illingworth was instrumental in setting up to allow smaller but very capable racing yachts to compete in races offshore as the larger yachts do in the long established Royal Ocean Racing Club events.
