We have known 'Withy' since 1999
when we carried out an extensive program of repairs:
Removal of anteboard case and
Repairs to keelson and centre
Re-bed and refasten ballast
keel and centre board case
She is now owned by Richard
Meynell who lives close to Birdham Pool and looks
after her well.
A year or so ago,
Richard said that he was going to investigate the
possibility of installing an electric motor for her
auxillary propulsion. September 2016 the decision
had been made and Richard ordered a 48 volt system
from Thames Electric who have supplied many electric
propulsion systems on varied types of craft.
The system on 'Withy' features a motor / propeller
unit bolted to the hull under the starboard quarter
with the power cables passing through the hull
planking to the power source and control unit. There
are 8x 6 volt batteries located in groups of two
within the boat, distributed to maintain the
vessel's trim. There is a discreet single level
control for the motor and with the installation
complete you are hardly aware all this hardware is
We had the job of building
the hull reinforcement to mount the motor unit and
the mountings for all the batteries and control unit
/ battery charger. We were able to mount the motor
so that all the cables came into the boat right at
the after end of the cockpit so there is no
intrusion into the cockpit sole boards.
We we had the motor / batteries and control units in
place, Emrhys and Ian of Thames Electric connected
everything up and took the boat on sea trials.
All a great success!
